- From the Greek "hippos", horse, and "lutos", tamer. It is therefore "the man who tames the horses". In Greek mythology, Hippolyte is the son of Theseus who, after rejecting the advances of his mother-in-law Phedre, was unjustly accused by her and sentenced to death by her father. The story goes that Theseus raised the wrath of Poseidon to destroy him. It is celebrated on August 13 with Saint Hippolyte, brilliant theologian of the third century.
